Carport Prices in Krabi: What Makes Them Differ

Two neighbours in the same village can each build a carport for two cars and end up paying quite different amounts. Neither was necessarily ripped off. Carports look simple, but the price depends on things you can't see from a photo of the finished job. This page explains what those things are, so you can read a quote properly and get an accurate price.

How Rong measures a carport

On site, Rong measures width and length, including any overhang past the posts. He checks the height of the existing eaves and the ground level, because a carport attached to the house has to fall away from it so rain drains. He also looks at the gates and the driveway, because the posts can't go where a car door needs to open.

What makes same-size carports cost different amounts

Span and number of posts

The span is the distance between posts. More posts means smaller beams. Fewer posts, or no post in the middle of the parking bay, means larger beams to stop the roof sagging. Most people want clear space to open doors and reverse in, and that choice alone moves the price.

Steel sections

Posts, beams and purlins come in different sizes and wall thicknesses. A long span or a heavy roof needs heavier steel. A quote that just says "steel frame" tells you nothing. Ask for the section sizes in writing.

Roofing material

Roofing sheets differ in price, weight and how much noise they make in heavy rain. Sheets with insulation cost more but make the space underneath cooler. A heavier roof needs a stronger frame, so the choice affects the steel as well.

Footings and ground

If there's a solid concrete slab of the right thickness, posts can often be fixed to it. If the ground is fill, lawn or a thin driveway, we need to dig and pour new footings. That's a separate line on the quote, and it's one of the most common things cheap quotes leave out.

Joining the house

A carport can lean on the existing house or stand on its own frame. Fixing to a wall or roof that can't take the load is how cracks and leaks start. Sometimes a free-standing structure right next to the house is the better answer, even though it uses more steel.

Rust protection near the sea

Access and distance

Can a truck get steel to your gate? Is there power for the welder near the work? Is there an old roof to remove? Remote sites and boat-access areas such as Ko Lanta and Ko Phi Phi carry a travel fee, stated in the quote.

Warning signs in a very cheap carport quote

• No section sizes for posts, beams or purlins
• No mention of footings when the ground clearly isn't a solid slab
• No gutter, downpipe or flashing where the carport meets the house
• Nothing about rust protection beyond "painted"
• Removal of the old structure not mentioned
• No written quote at all, just a figure said out loud

Questions to ask every builder

1. What size are the posts, beams and purlins?
2. Are new footings included, and how deep?
3. Will the carport be fixed to the house or stand on its own? Why?
4. Which rust protection system is included?
5. Where will the rainwater go?
6. What does the warranty cover, and is it written down?
