A handrail is a small job that makes a big difference. Elderly parents coming to stay, someone recovering from surgery or anyone unsteady on their feet tends to fall in the same places: getting out of the car, the front steps, a ramp, and paths that turn slippery in the rainy season. Pool-side steps and tiled terraces at villas are classic spots too.
On site Rong looks at how tall the person using the rail is, which hand they favour, whether they use a walking stick, whether the wall or floor is strong enough to fix into, whether the path sits in full sun all day, and where the rail needs to run continuously without a gap. He will ask the person who will use it to stand and hold a trial height before setting it.
Common mistakes: a rail too high or too low to lean on properly, a rail that stops one step short of the bottom, open pipe ends or sharp edges that catch clothing, and weak fixings that wobble under load. A wobbly rail is more dangerous than no rail, because people trust it and put their weight on it.
Send photos on LINE of where you want the rail, a wide shot plus the floor and wall at that spot, a rough length and your location pin. Short runs of a few metres are fine. Every job gets a written quotation, and labour-only is an option.

Designs and options
Wall-mounted grab rail
Runs along a wall and takes up no path width. The wall must be solid masonry that holds fixings firmly. If it is a lightweight partition or render that is coming loose, Rong will suggest free-standing posts instead.
Post-mounted rail
For outdoor paths and ramps with no wall alongside. The posts must be anchored into solid ground; if the base is soil or thin, cracked concrete, a footing is needed first.
Stair handrail
Follows the line of the stairs and should extend a little past the first and last step, so you can hold it before stepping up and after stepping down. If someone is weaker on one side, fit rails on both sides.
Balcony and terrace safety railing
Stops falls from raised decks, balconies and terraces. With young children around, avoid horizontal bars they can climb like a ladder, and keep gaps narrow enough that they can't squeeze through. Some attractive designs are simply not suitable for a family home.

How the price is worked out
Handrail work starts from 10,000 THB, but there is no fixed price and we can't give a real figure in advance. It depends on the site, length, number of posts, fixing points, whether new footings are needed, and steel prices at the time. Rong does a free site survey first, then writes an itemised quotation based on material prices at that time. Remote or boat-access areas such as Ko Lanta and Ko Phi Phi carry a travel fee, which is shown in the quotation before you agree to anything.
There is no fixed price. It depends on your site and on steel and material prices at the time. The site survey is free.

How long it takes
It depends on the length of rail, the number of locations and the type of wall or floor. Most handrail jobs are small, but new post footings need time for the concrete to cure. Rong gives a timeline after the survey and it goes in the quote.

My parents are coming to stay. What height should a grab rail be?
It should suit the person using it: they can stand upright and hold it without hunching or lifting their shoulder. Rong has them try it on site before fixing the height. If people in the house differ a lot in height, mention it at the survey.
Will you do just a few metres of rail?
Yes. Plenty of handrail jobs are short runs. Remember every job starts from 10,000 THB, so if there are other spots that need a rail, it makes sense to do them in one visit. Send photos on LINE first.
Do steel rails get too hot to hold in the sun?
Yes, especially dark colours in the afternoon sun. Options are a light paint colour, a grip cover that stays cooler, or a roof over the path at the same time. The roof also helps in the rainy season, but costs more.
Our villa has young children. What railing is safe for a balcony?
Avoid horizontal bars, which children climb like a ladder, and keep the gaps between bars narrow enough that a child can't slip through. Vertical bars are the usual safer choice. Tell Rong at the survey so he can steer you away from unsuitable designs.
Can you fit rails in a bathroom?
Ask on LINE with photos of the bathroom. Bathrooms are always wet, so the material has to suit that, and drilling must not damage tiles or waterproofing. A bathroom rail should be chosen for wet use, not copied from an outdoor rail.
How does payment work? Do you issue a tax invoice?
We take a 30% deposit before work starts, and the balance is paid as set out in the quotation. You get a cash bill; we do not charge VAT and cannot issue a tax invoice, so if your company needs one, tell us at the start.
