Wide-span carports, roofs and gates in Khlong Thom

Example of steel work and home extensions in Khlong Thom, Krabi
Illustrative example of this type of work · ask us on LINE for photos of real jobs

Khlong Thom is an inland district in the south of the province, known for its hot springs and plenty of rubber and palm land. Most homes are detached houses on generous plots with room to spare out front, and many families run more than one vehicle: a car, a pickup and motorbikes. Jobs here tend to be bigger than in town.

When land is not the constraint, the questions change. It is no longer how to squeeze a roof into a gap, but how to stop a big roof sagging, keep posts out of the way when reversing, and cope with monsoon downpours. Worth knowing up front: the fewer posts you want, the heavier the steel has to be, and the price rises with it.

What people here usually ask us to build

Wide-span roofs in Khlong Thom: posts, steel size, footings and rain

Nearly everyone building a three- or four-car carport wants as few posts as possible. It can be done, but it has a cost. The wider the post spacing, the bigger the beams or trusses. Cut the steel size to hit a price and the roof sags in the middle, holds water and shakes in strong wind. We suggest pricing two options before deciding: no centre post, and one extra post placed where it does not block vehicles. Sometimes the difference is enough to change your mind.

Water is the second issue. Inland rain comes in heavy bursts, and a big roof sheds a lot of it in a short time. Gutters and downpipes must be large enough, and the pipe outlets need somewhere to send the water, or it lands in the yard, forms puddles and washes out the ground under the footings.

The third is the ground. Land that was plantation until recently, or has just been filled, can still settle. Identical footings under every post, without looking at the soil, can leave some posts sinking more than others, twisting the roof and opening leaks at the joints.

  • Measure the turning space of your largest vehicle before fixing post positions.
  • Ask for a price comparison between no centre post and one extra post.
  • A big roof needs enough pitch for water to run off fast rather than pool mid-sheet.
  • Ask whether gutters and downpipes are sized for heavy rain, and where the outlet water goes.
  • If the land was filled recently, say so at the start; it affects the footings and the price.

Getting there and booking a site survey

About 40–45 km from Krabi Town

The bigger the job, the more useful photos on LINE become: a wide shot of the whole yard, the largest vehicle, rough yard dimensions (width by length), whether the ground is new fill, original soil or concrete, and a location pin. Rong can then bring every question about post spacing and footings in one visit.

Khlong Thom is a fair way from town, so surveys may be grouped with other homes on the same route. If several days suit you, tell us and you may get an earlier slot. Any travel cost for outlying areas is shown in the quotation before you agree.

Permits and permission

In Khlong Thom district some subdistricts fall under a subdistrict municipality (thesaban tambon) and others under a Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (OrBorTor). Ask the office for your subdistrict about building or extension permits. Large structures such as wide-span roofs are especially worth asking about, and some may need an engineer to review the design. At provincial level, contact the Krabi Provincial Public Works and Town Planning Office. This is general guidance, not legal advice. Rules differ between local offices and change over time, so confirm with the office that covers your address before any work starts. If you rent, get the landlord's approval in writing first.

Questions from Khlong Thom

Can you build a four-car carport with no centre post?

Generally yes, but the roof steel gets bigger as the span grows, and so does the material cost. We show you the price difference between no centre post and an extra post placed out of the way, and you decide. Very wide spans may need an engineer to check the design.

Our land in Khlong Thom was a rubber plantation and was filled recently. Can posts go in straight away?

Fresh fill can still settle, so posts should not go in without checking the ground. Sometimes footings must be larger or deeper, which affects price and time. If you are not in a hurry, letting the ground settle first can be the cheaper option.

Our big roof overflows its gutters every rainy season. Can that be fixed?

It is usually undersized gutters or downpipes, or too few downpipes. Often the gutters can be replaced and downpipes added without touching the roof. Send photos of the gutters and pipe outlets on LINE.

How long until you can survey a house in Khlong Thom?

We confirm a survey date after chatting on LINE. Because it is some distance from town, we may combine the trip with other homes on the same route. Send photos in the meantime. Any travel cost is shown in the quotation before you agree.
